There is never a dull day at sea with Teddy Borg…

Up at the crack of dawn to prepare for his guests – whether that be shopping at the local supermarket for fresh ingredients ready for prepping a tasty salad lunch for his guests on board or cleaning, running checks on and refuelling his beloved Luzzu, St. Martin, ready for her next adventure from Xlendi – the man described by a recent guest on board as a ‘human dynamo’ is buzzing with the energy that makes his trips so special. Teddy is the epitome of multi-tasking – I have never seen someone achieve so much whilst scooting around an area in minimal time.

Ted Loves His Work

Teddy’s love for his work is serious – a highly seasoned boatman operating tours around the coast of Gozo and to Comino for over 40 years – he is intent on his guests having an enjoyable trip on his traditional Maltese Luzzu boat – hence the name, Ted’s Enjoyable Boat Trips. Ted watches the weather conditions meticulously and would rather pull a trip if the weather is not good enough than run with it with the concern that his guests don’t have the best time on board.

With multiple swim-stops, a light salad lunch on board, a great retro soundtrack and a knowledgeable, humorous Captain overseeing the trip, for me it is a must-do if you’re on Gozo. I’ve been back on the round-the-island boat trip twice since my maiden voyage.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

A born and bred Gozitan, Teddy left school at 14. He became a fisherman after sneaking onto his father’s boat, hiding under whatever items he could – whilst his father, himself a fisherman, had told him to stay away from the boat. When Teddy’s father discovered the young Teddy stowed away on board, he realised he couldn’t stop his curiosity of the sea and, ultimately, together they went fishing. That curiosity and love of the sea never left Teddy.

When British troops were stationed on Malta, Teddy ran boat trips from Xlendi for soldiers – a respite for them from their duties. Realising that English would be a helpful addition to his language skills along with his native Maltese, he taught himself by watching English-spoken films.

Ted’s Enjoyable Boat Trips Today

There have been many iterations of how the boat trips have run on St. Martin over the years, but the one today is a jewel in his crown. Teddy does not at all see himself as a ‘King’ – just a lover of the sea, his beloved boat, his family, friends and Gozo.

Teddy has used all the skills he has learnt as a boatman and being a Gozitan who recognises his global reach to showcase his beautiful island, and to curate a very special, relaxed and personable experience on board.

My Take…

I only recommend things I’ve personally experienced and feel to be worthy of sharing. Teddy was recommended by a friend who has been travelling to Gozo for decades and has known him since they were both young children.

He delivered such a fabulous day to myself and my friends on our original trip that I keep crowing about it (my one friend dreaded spending several hours on a boat only to say it was ‘the best day’ after the trip ended!).

I keep going back on board because it is such a wonderful way way to spend a day – and to meet new people from all around the world!

Teddy’s boat trips usually run from May to October – but you could do a cheeky ask if the weather is good in April or November if the Luzzu is out on the water.
