On a beautiful Tuesday evening in late July, the sun was beginning to dip behind the Gozitan hills when my friends and I arrived at Tal-Massar Winery, a family-run vineyard nestled on the outskirts of Għarb. The terrace glowed in the soft evening light, and the air was rich with the scent of warm earth and ripening grapes. It was one of those evenings when the island seemed to hold its breath — golden, still, and full of promise.
A Welcome in the Vines
It was a lovely mix of people at the venue – a global group of wine lovers. We were greeted warmly by the owner, Anthony Hili, a third-generation vintner running the winery with his wife, Marisa. He led us between rows of vines that have been lovingly tended for generations, explaining how the unique soil and climate shape each harvest. The grapes tell their own story of Gozo: resilient, humble, and full of character.
As we walked, he spoke about the vineyard’s beginnings — how it started as a small family dream, rooted in the island’s agricultural heritage. Each bottle carries not just the flavour of Gozo’s land but also its rhythm — the steady pulse of an island that still moves with the seasons.
The Table Awaits
Back at the terrace, tables were set overlooking the valley below. The first glasses of chilled white arrived. Then came the food — simple, honest dishes that celebrated local produce and how to bring out the richness of flavour in both the wine and the food.

Each course came with a different wine, and the pairings felt effortless. Anthony spoke with gentle passion about each one, explaining how Gozo’s unique climate gives every wine a distinct character — dry but generous, bold but balanced.
A Taste of Gozo
Looking out over the vineyards, the last light turning the fields to amber, I realised what makes Tal-Massar so memorable. It’s not just the wine — though the wine is beautiful — it’s the sense of being connected to something real. The land, the people, the care behind every bottle.
Some places you visit to see. Others, like Tal-Massar, you visit to feel. It’s where Gozo’s heart reveals itself — raising a glass to the good life.
The evening was paced well, with food and wine courses delivered in an orderly manner, with just the right amount of time between one and another. Anthony and Marisa ere wonderful hosts and I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Tal-Massar Winery.
In Gozo, wine isn’t just a drink — it’s a way of telling the island’s story, one sip at a time.
